While we often experience tears as a sign of sadness or despair, sometimes they reflect relief, gratitude, and even joy.
Lula has been a guest of The Sister Isaac Center for many years. At 87 years old, she visits us two to three times each year for help with food, cleaning supplies, and other everyday necessities. What we love most about Lula is her joyful spirit. Despite what we know has been a difficult life, she always greets us with a warm smile and a kind word.
Last week, Lula came in—still smiling, but clearly distressed. Due to expenses from a recent medical issue, she had been unable to pay her energy bill and had received a disconnect notice—her first ever. She couldn’t imagine facing days without lights, heat, or a way to cook.
The amount she owed was more than we typically cover, but we couldn’t bear the thought of her having to go from agency to agency seeking help. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to step in and pay her bill in full. Tears flowed freely – hers and ours alike.
Moments like these remind us why we do what we do—and how powerful compassion can be. A very Happy Easter to all!
